The Current System

There is no existing system. The proposed system is a brand new effort.

The Proposed System: Needs

The proposed system is a storytelling application for Facebook. The system facilitates the creation of a story. Through collaboration with friends, a user participates in the creation of a story. Each user writes a new section, and then passes the story to another user. This application is primarily for entertainment purposes.

The Proposed System: Users and Modes of Operation

The mode of operation is web based. The system is a Facebook application accessible through the Facebook website via a user's Facebook profile. The group's application server will host and deliver the content. The user will add the application to their profile using the published and established methods, which are common to all Facebook applications.

Reader - Users participating in the writing of the story can read the story in its entirety.
Writer - Users contribute to the story when the story is passed to them.

The Proposed System: Operational Scenarios

The user starts by initiating a new story, providing a title and starting sentence or paragraph. When finished writing, the user can send the story to a friend on their friend list. The friend is notified to participate in a new story. The friend has the option of accepting the invitation, contributing to the story and passing the invitation along. Alternatively, the friend may decline to participate pushing the story back to the original owner to re-forward.

The Proposed System: Operational Features

Must Have:

The user should be able to start a new story and pass it to a friend.
The user should be able to receive an existing story and pass it to a friend.
Each part of the story written at different times or users should be identifiable.
If rejected by friend, the user should be able to pass it to a new friend.
Use Facebook Markup Language (FBML) to generate the user interface

Would Like to Have:

Provide the ability to post comments on the story, outside of the story itself.
The user should be able to view all stories, in their entirety, they have participated in.

The Proposed System: Expected Impacts

The system will allow users to tell the same story from different points of view and create fictional stories as well. We expect the system to be a fun way of communicating with existing friends and discovering new friends.

The Proposed System: Analysis

Expected Improvements:

Foster greater collaboration among friends
Facilitate the discovery of new friends

Disadvantages:

Facebook applications are free, so there is no direct revenue opportunity

Limitations:

The system is a Facebook application subject to the restrictions of the Facebook platform and its API

Risks:

The entry point for the system is through Facebook. If FaceBook is down, so is the system.

Alternatives and Tradeoffs:

To avoid the cost and hassle of using a web hosting service, the group is hosting the system from a group member's computer.
